Architecture Development

The above images show my final model in perspective, section and plan. On the right hand side you can see the roof which has angular shaped windows which allow for the natural light to come in, the second image down is a plan of the first floor where you enter the building, it has an angular opening which leads onto the stairwell going down to the second floor. This bottom floor is dark and is where Diamond Lion sleeps.

Desert Environment Development from 3ds Max

I played around in 3ds max for quite a while trying to get a natural looking terrain. I had thought about importing Crysis height maps into 3ds max a couple of weeks ago so I thought that I would give it a try... it ended up being pretty easy and it gave a great result to a flat plane that could be further manipulated. I also found a plugin that allowed me to create the realistic shape of the rocks, it was called Francois Mourlevat’s Asteroids Generator Script and it produced random seeds that created a morphed "blob" which, when textured, looked like a real rock.

Graphic Art from Zaha Hadid

200 WORD ANALYSIS

The graphical work that I chose to look more closely at for Zaha Hadid has a very strong sense of the bold lines that are used in her architectural pieces. There is a strong sense of monochromatic colour schemes which would suggest the influence of particular materials that are used in her buildings.

The fluid lines which divide up the page into its grid provide an explanation of where to look and how to read the poster. They also give the reader a sense of what the poster is about before even reading any of the text.

The text takes on a secondary nature to the lines and colour which suggests that whatever the poster is talking about must be a very visual subject. It also creates intrigue.

300 Word Review So Far...

After creating the two separate environments and discussing the possibilities with my tutor it was decided that I would develop the environment for my Spore creature, Diamond Lion.
Diamond Lion has a very strong personality that greatly reflects the characteristics of Zaha Hadid. It was these characteristics that greatly influenced the beginning of my design. Because I was going off the architect’s personality rather than her actual work, my design became very literal.

My next step was to re-visit the diamond object that had a heavy influence in my model and look at it from a metaphorical way and think about how else it could be represented. This is the way that Zaha Hadid approaches her work, through abstract ideas and connecting them with nature, bold lines and fluidity.

I kept thinking of caves and rocky earth as this is where a diamond comes from and it is very unassuming of such a beautiful rock. I wanted to keep the cavernous structure as I thought that this would create an intimate sense of space but I was having trouble with making the form more abstract.

I decided to go back to my paper model and build on that which has helped me as a guide to the form of the model. I have also looked at textures that Zaha Hadid uses which are very detailed and cutting edge. I would like to try and use the lines that make up the diamond cut as a structural grid surrounding the form that is a very smooth and sleek texture with the inside looking like rocky earth.

From here I need to refine the interior so that I have an interesting section and work on the textures so that they will show up on my BuildAR model.

Chosen Digital Environment

DIAMOND LION
...................................................

This is a sample shot of my 3ds max model in development (without any textures, a gap in the ceiling and no interior lighting... these are in the making). I have taken my paper fold as the envelope of the building and have placed the cave models inside the envelop acting as rooms. I created a freestanding "external cave" as the entrance to the cave rooms to create a directional decision even after entering the sapce. Generally speaking, caves are found outside amongst natural environments, here I have changed this so that when you enter a man-made environment you are faced with something that you thought would be outside.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT WITH MATT DAY

I have chosen to go back to my original form of the diamond and make it abstract by using scale. It is a tiny little diamond structure that sits between rocks in a large open desert. Diamond Lion is like a little insect who lives in there. The strong angles of the diamond shape make it an ideal link to Zaha Hadid's work.
